📄 UK ETA Guide

What is the UK ETA?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a pre-entry permission introduced by the United Kingdom for nationals of countries who do not currently require a visa to visit the UK. It is part of the UK's new digital border system.

The ETA is linked electronically to your passport – you do not receive a physical stamp, sticker, or certificate. It allows carriers and border officials to verify your permission to travel before you board a plane or arrive at a port.

An approved ETA permits multiple trips to the UK, each of up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family or friends, or short-term business or study activities. It is not a visa and does not grant the right to live or work in the UK.

The UK ETA applies to nationals of specific countries who currently do not require a visa.

Americas

USA, Canada, Mexico, and other nations in North and South America who are currently visa-exempt for short UK visits.

Europe (Non-UK)

EU and EEA citizens from countries such as Germany, France, Poland, Spain, Italy, and others. Note: British citizens do NOT need an ETA.

Asia-Pacific

Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and other GCC and Asia-Pacific nations as introduced progressively.

Note: Citizens who currently require a Standard Visitor Visa do NOT apply for an ETA – they must apply for the appropriate visa instead. The ETA is specifically for visa-exempt nationals. Always check the official UK government website for the latest eligibility list.

No – your ETA is linked electronically to your passport. You do not need to carry a printed confirmation. However, it is advisable to save your confirmation email for reference.

Certain criminal convictions may affect your ETA eligibility. You must answer the eligibility questions honestly. Providing false information is a serious offence. If you have any concern, seek professional immigration advice before applying.

If your ETA application is refused, you will receive information about why and whether there is a right of appeal. You may need to apply for a Standard Visitor Visa instead. Contact the UK Visas & Immigration service for guidance.

No – an ETA is a pre-travel permission, not a visa. It does not grant the right to work in the UK or remain beyond the permitted 6-month visit period. It is a simpler, cheaper, and faster process than a full visa application.

Important Notes

Although most ETAs are approved within 3 working days, it is strongly recommended to apply at least 2 weeks before travel to allow time for any complications or additional checks.

No. An ETA only permits tourism, visiting family or friends, and certain permitted business and study activities. To work in the UK, you must obtain an appropriate work visa.

Your ETA is linked to a specific passport. If you obtain a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA linked to the new passport number, even if your old ETA is still valid.

No. An ETA is a pre-travel authorisation, but admission to the UK is always at the discretion of a Border Force officer. You may still be questioned on arrival and asked to provide supporting documentation for your visit.
